Mt. Province renews partnership with UNFPA

BONTOC, Mt. Province-- The provincial government renewed its partnership contract with the United Nations Fund for Population Activities (UNFPA) with the handing of a letter of understanding by UNFPA officials to their provincial counterpart in a fitting ceremony held at the capitol quadrangle last Thursday.

The letter of understanding will be reviewed and signed by provincial officials the soonest possible time so that the approved annual program of activities charted by personnel of the provincial and the ten municipal government units could commence.

UNFPA Country Representative Ugochi Daniels was in town to personally deliver the letter of understanding and vowed to closely work with concerned offices and employees in the common vision of improving the reproductive health condition in the locality.

Daniels stated that Mountain Province is the first local government in the country to be handed the letter of understanding. During her visit last year, she was adopted daughter of the province and given the Igorot name “Tuwa-a”.

“I personally saw the effect of the program in the province, particularly among the people of the pilot municipalities. It was for this reason that we decided to extend our cooperation with you so that we could reach more this time,” Daniels said.

UNFPA first included five years ago when its 6th Country Program started. Of the ten municipalities, the towns of Bontoc, Sagada, and Paracelis were selected as pilot areas for the program.

During the program review late last year in Manila, Governor Leonard Mayaen proposed that all municipalities should be included should the province be again selected as a beneficiary of the program. The proposal was granted.

“I thank the UNFPA for selecting out humble province and for granting my request for the program to extend services to all the municipalities. Rest assured that we will do our share,” Mayaen declared. (ABaybay/PIO Mt. Province PGO)
