PIA-13: The Philippines has improved in the 2011 Press Freedom Index by the Reporters sans Frontières (RSF) or Reporters without Borders because of better democratic space in the country. RSF, a Brussels-based organization, said the Phils has improved slightly in its 2011 Press Freedom Index although it still reels from the stigma of the November 2009 Maguindanao massacre where at least 57 were killed including 32 media people

PIA-13: The decision of the DOJ to file criminal charges against former LWUA Board chairman Prospero Pichay Jr. and acting LWUA Administrator Daniel Landingin in connection with the anomalous purchase of the troubled Express Savings Bank Inc. represents yet another milestone in the Aquino government's quest to fight corruption.

PIA-13: PNoy will lead on Friday the launching of the Philippines Business Registry System (PBRS) in Makati City which is aimed at speeding up business registrations in the country. The PBRS is a web-based system that will serve as a one-stop shop for entrepreneurs who want to transact or register their businesses, BIR documents as well as Pag-IBIG, PhilHealth & SSS. Those documents are prerequisite in opening up a business.

PIA-1/LA UNION: The PIA-1, as chair of the Advocacy Committee of the Association of Regional Executives (AREX), spearheads kapihan as venue for the regional executives to disseminate their agency's programs, projects, and accomplishments. The kapihan is intended solely for the executives to speak before media people and provide direct answers for timely dissemination of information, AREX president Silverio Mangaoang, port manager of the Phil. Ports Authority said.

PIA-1/PANGASINAN: Dagupan City turns Chinatown today with the celebration of Chinese New Year. Activities include motorized parade, food court featuring Chinese food and a cultural program tonight featuring four groups of Lion dancers. The city's mayor and vice-mayor both have Chinese blood.

PIA-1/PANGASINAN: Two important landmarks are set to be restored in Lingayen town-the old Casa Real, the former seat of the provincial government and the adjacent 'carsel' that serves as the provincial jail. The restoration is part of the cultural renaissance program of Pangasinan that seeks to revive past glories and pride of the province.

PIA-1/ILOCOS SUR: The BFAR, in coordination with the PNP and Maritime Police, has intensified its campaign against illegal fishing by deploying Bantay Dagat members along coastal barangays to save the coral reefs and fish sanctuaries in the province.

PIA-2/CAGAYAN: Almost all public utility vans plying in Region 2 already complied with the order of LTFRB to paint their vehicles with white for proper identification against colorum or illegal passenger vans.   PIA-2/CAGAYAN: The National Tobacco Administration extended technical assistance to 1,181 tobacco farmers in Cagayan to boost their production for export.

DENR seals partnership with LGUs for stronger implementation of solid waste management law

 

QUEZON CITY, August 16 (PIA) -- In an effort to address environmental problems in Metro Manila and effect greater public compliance with the Ecological Solid Waste Management Act of 2000, Department of Environment and Natural Resources Secretary Ramon J.P. Paje vowed to strengthen its partnership with local government units and civic society.
