by Dan B. Codamon

KIANGAN, Ifugao, June 30 (PIA) - - The Technological Education and Skills Development Administration (TESDA) recently trained 22 reflexologists or masseurs from this municipality at the Youth Hostel here.

This is part of the joint endeavor of the local government unit and TESDA to help the people in this community develop skills and find alternative sources of livelihood by performing physical works needed by individuals and earn income.

According to Eulalie Dulnuan, aide to the office of the mayor and coordinator of the training, the projects are intended to help solve unemployment and encourage the people to acquire entrepreneurial interest by using the knowledge and skills they acquired during the training and venture into self-employment activities as service workers providing the physical therapy needs of individuals like massage.

She said this is one of the practical and doable assistance that the municipal government can extend to its people for them to earn income and improve their quality of living.

They can apply it in the community for a service pay ranging from P50 to P200 depending on the kind of massage and number of hours performed on the client, in other local places of the country needing their services or even abroad.

The 22 trainees are composed of unemployed young professionals, housewives, out-of –school youths who have shown interest in this kind of blue collar job training.

The training was done in 20 days with the first few days devoted on lectures on the anatomy of the human body so they will understand the parts where to apply the pressure and determine the cause of pain or discomfort of the client during the massage. This was followed by the actual demonstration in the proper way to massage.

They were also trained to conduct interviews regarding the clients’ physical and health condition to gather information before the service is performed to prevent any perilous situation that might affect the well being of the customer.

Before they graduated, each trainee was required to massage 50 clients for free and record their conditions and remarks before and after the service was performed.

This is to assess the depth of skills and knowledge they acquired whether they are now ready to perform this kind of service. It was also one way of monitoring and evaluating customer satisfaction; also it was a way where they can improve and maintain their skills.(JDP/DBC-PIA CAR,Ifugao)
