Feeding program improves nutrition status of 90 kids

by Vency D. Bulayungan

AGUINALDO, Ifugao, May 2 (PIA) - - A barangay captain here was so delighted in the feeding program of the government which was supported by non-government organizations that led to the improvement of the health of 90 kids here.

“We are very happy that government is doing something for the health and nutrition of our children. We admit that the barangay cannot provide all the needs of our people but with the various programs of our government, we are able to address one of the basic needs of our people and that is providing nutritious foods for our constituents,” said a beaming Ricky Uchayan of Barangay Taang. With the program, some children gained their normal weight, Uchayan said.

The supplemental feeding program for malnourished children was started last February and sponsored by the Feeding Hope Milk Program, MEAD Johnson Nutritionals and implemented by the Municipal Social Welfare and Development Office (MSWDO).

According to Helaria Wacoy, the Municipal Social Welfare officer, health services such as medical checkup of children, deworming, vitamin supplementation, dental cleaning and tooth extraction, and weighing of children were also conducted.

The program also conducted values formation sessions on the low cost but nutritious food, cooking demonstration for snacks and meals, clean and proper preparation/handling of food to parents of Barangays Talite and Taang. A total of 98 mothers were trained how to cook nutritious foods available in the locality; 42 fathers were also trained as trainors,” Wacoy said.

The feeding program was actively participated by the parents and schedule of the cooking was religiously followed. A weekly meeting of parents with the day care workers and midwife was conducted to resolve issues and problems encountered during the implementation.(JDP/VDB – PIA CAR, Ifugao)

Ifugao PLGU, SN Aboitiz distribute 100 swine to poor farmers

by Vency D. Bulayungan

LAGAWE, Ifugao, May 2 (PIA) - - The Provincial Veterinary (PVET) Office here foresees a brighter future for 20 poor farmers in four towns here as it distributed 100 swine provided by the SN Aboitiz.

Provincial vet Dr. James Gopeng said this is a welcome development especially to the beneficiaries of this program which aims to uplift the living conditions of poor farmers in the towns of Banaue, Hingyon, Kiangan, and Lagawe.

“We are thankful for the assistance of our stakeholders, SN Aboitiz, and Mighty Feeds Co., because our farmer-beneficiaries will have other sources of income aside from the agricultural products from the ricefields,” Gopeng said.

Gopeng said that each farmer received five piglets. To prepare the farmers for the said project,Mighty Feeds Company conducted training and technical assistance. It also distributed feeds worth P55,000, he bared.

To qualify for the project, the beneficiary should be a rice tiller-farmer and should provide pig pens.

SN Aboitiz operates the Magat Dam and the said project is part of its corporate social responsibility to the communities. (JDP/VDB-PIA CAR, Ifugao)

Lagawe stude hopes to finish college education with summer job

by Vency D. Bulayungan

LAGAWE, Ifugao, May 2 (PIA) - - A senior student here is optimistic she will finish her college education with the help of the summer job of the local government unit (LGU) here.

Grace Guihoman, an incoming fourth year student at the Ifugao State University (IFSU) said that with the financial assistance of the LGU here, her tuition and miscellaneous fees are being taken care of. She is one of the 40 selected poor but deserving students employed by the LGU from the 20 barangays here this summer to earn for their tuition fees and other school needs.

Adonis Castisimo of the mayor’s office said that this is in line with the program of Mayor Ceasario Cabbigat on education, “Each student will receive P210 a day for 20 working days a month for a total of P4, 200,” he said.

Guihoman said that she is thankful to the municipal government for this financial assistance and assured the benefactor that this will not go in vain for she promised that she will do her best to finish her studies.

With nine siblings and a burned house last January, Guihoman related how difficult it is to pursue a college education. As a former chairman of the Sangguniang Kabataan in her barangay, Jucbong here, she was a scholar from first year to third year college. Then came this educational assistance of the LGU.

“I will share this “blessing” to my younger sibling who is also a high school student since we will live together in a boarding house here in town center because my parents cannot afford to provide all our needs,” she said.

She encouraged other students like her not to be discouraged if they are financially incapable rather they seek every opportunity as the government is ready to lend a helping hand. (JDP/VDB, PIA CAR, Ifugao)

Ifugao town promotes Botika ng Bayan

by Dan B. Codamon

ASIPULO, Ifugao, May 3 (PIA) - - To centralize the procurement or sourcing of medicines and other medical supplies and the distribution of the same, the municipal government of this town has established Botika ng Bayan in the community.

This idea was proposed by Councilor Clarence Dupingay and was strongly supported and adopted by the Sanguniang Bayan and approved by the municipal chief executive into an ordinance.

The Botika ng Bayan aims to promote the basic health services of the people and for a sustainable and efficient service in the health centers in the barangays of the community.

It is under the supervision of the municipal health officer that has a yearly funding for the purchase of medicines and other supplies necessary for its operation.

The Botika ng Bayan is located at Barangay Antipolo and is currently serving all the other barangays because of its strategic location.

The Municipal Treasury Office collects all the remittances and issues the official receipts while the Municipal Accounting Office conducts monthly audit of the operations of the Botika ng Bayan.

Seventy percent of the total sales submitted to the Treasury Office accrue to the General Fund of the municipality and the remaining 30 percent serves as petty cash fund of the Municipal Health Office for other service expenses.

The local officials of this town are encouraging their constituents to support and patronize the established Botika ng Bayan.( DC-PIA CAR,Ifugao)
