THE IMELDA VILLAGE BARANGAY

In the year 2003, the City Government launched a program on recycling and zero waste management. Anent to this program, the Imelda Village Council has carried this project as a source of livelihood programs as one of their various activities in the mother craft program.

To augment the progress of our organization, seminars and trainings were conducted to all members as well as non-members within the community as a form of multiplying our membership and achieving goals. Skills trainings on paper craft were then initiated by Pilipinas Shell Foundation on July 5-9, 2004, the Department of Trade and Information followed similarly and multiplied by way of the Women’s Kalipi on October 17-21, 2006 which was then funded by the Congressional Fund of Honorable Congressman Mauricio G. Domogan.

Paper craft was a source of old newspapers, magazines, bond papers, brochures, and also plastic and glass bottles creatively designed and skillful woven into flower vases, trays, decors, and also earrings and necklaces that would amazingly attract buyers.

On the advertisement side by way of contributions such as media, participation on the different trade fairs, exposition and mall appearances, the inspired success of the Imelda Village Livelihood by way of increased production and skills were also shared to other barangays as part of outreach programs.

The officers of the Imelda Village Livelihood through their president Mrs. Alejandria Paraiso spearheaded their purpose in accordance to the vision and mission statements of the Imelda Village Barangay Council.

The livelihood program of the Imelda Village Barangay has caught attention from other municipalities and cities as it has been a target itinerary for various Liga ng mga Barangay chapters. Although not yet fully established, the consistency of the programs undertaken by the barangay goes to show that the barangay officials are serious into elevating the status of their programs into a higher level, as well as to further the program with regards earning income, recruitment of more participants, improvement on the recycling and reusing of materials and other concerns involved in the said program. Remarkably, it has been a model, along with the livelihood programs of other barangays such as that of Gibraltar and Pacdal barangay.

Surely, although it is not a guarantee of full compensation for the persons who produce such products, the income derived is used to further strengthen the porgram, as well as additional income to the makers of these products. Furthermore, it promotes the practice of reusing and recycling materials which is a form of waste reduction that serves as a contribution in addressing the garbage problems of the city.
