TABUK CITY, Kalinga, Jan.9 (PIA) -- This province accomplished one hundred percent of its target under the national greening program (NGP) of President Aquino in 2011.
Noel Barrientos, Senior Forest Management Officer of the Provincial Environment and Natural Resources Office here said 725,000 seedlings were planted in 1,450 hectares of reforestation sites.
“Those were our target last year and were accomplished 100%. Under the Community Environment and Natural Resources Offices (CENRO) of Pinukpuk which covers the municipalities of Balbalan, Pasil, Lubuagan, Tinglayan and Pinukpuk, 293,000 seedlings were planted in 586 hectares involving 2,288 planters,” Barrientos said.
He said a total of 432,000 seedlings were also planted in Rizal, Tanudan and this city under CENRO-Tabuk covering an area of 864 hectares and participated by 3,033 individual planters.
Planters came from partner peoples organizations, non-government organizations, Church members, and indigenous peoples (IP). “Areas like Community Base Forest Management, indigenous peoples ancestral domains, protected lands, and watersheds were planted,” Barrientos said.
Aside from the regular planting activities of DENR, the provincial government spearheaded tree planting activities involving government employees, students, police and the military.
A mix of forest tree species and fruit bearing trees were planted in all the municipalities and Tabuk City.
“Forest tree species can be harvested after 10 years while fruit bearing trees can be harvested three to five years. Grafted mangoes, rambutan and lanzones can bear fruit within that period,” Barrientos said. (JDP/PAB-PIA CAR,Kalinga)
